The New York Red Bulls are eliminated from the MLS Is Back Tournament after a 2-0 loss to Cincinnati FC Wednesday night. A late first half goal from Yuya Kubo and an own goal in the second from Florian Valot have sunk New York’s tournament aspirations.
New York controlled much of the possession the first half of the match. Ball movement and possession was obviously high on head coach Chris Armas’ list of priorities. However, it was a lot of possession but lacking much of an attacking threat. Right before the end of the first half, Cincinnati, in a rare moment in the Red Bulls half, landed the first blow. After a poor clearance from Amro Tarek in the 43rd, Yuya Kubo took full advantage and hit a low dipping ball from just outside the box that found the bottom left corner of the net.
The final dagger came in the 56th minute. Off a Haris Medunjanin corner kick, the left-footed curler flicked off the side of Valot’s head and keeper David Jensen could do little to keep it out of his own net.
The game finished with New York dominating possession 67%-33%, dominating the corner count 9-1 and finishing with a 19-4 shots advantage but Cincinnati keeper Przemyslaw Tyton was a brick wall in front of goal and denied every opportunity the Red Bulls took.
